2024 acrylic on canvas painting of Fly Geyser in Washoe County, Nevada, showing rainbow-hued travertine cones with green and red algae, wisps of steam rising, and a desert plain under a bright sky.

In this 2024 16×20″ acrylic on canvas, Nevada’s Fly Geyser bursts into a veil of steam above rainbow travertine cones streaked with emerald and crimson algae. Layered brushwork captures geothermal vibrancy against the stark desert plain. Mineral mounds glisten in ochre and teal, inviting viewers into a surreal landscape reverie.

Artist Statement

Fly Geyser emerged from my fascination with accidental beauty and the unexpected poetry of place. Painted in 2024 as a 16×20″ acrylic on canvas, it reflects the surreal thermal gardens sprouting in Nevada’s high desert. I was drawn to the geyser’s riot of color—emerald greens, rust reds, ochres—and the way steam threads through time and space, suspending a moment both volcanic and ethereal.

My process began with on-site sketches and photographs, capturing the delicate striations of travertine deposits and the algae that thrive in scalding waters. In the studio, I layered transparent glazes over impasto highlights to evoke the geyser’s glossy mineral surfaces and the desert’s muted expanses. Brushstrokes alternate between controlled and spontaneous, mirroring the tension between human intervention and geological forces.

Through Fly Geyser, I aim to invite viewers into a reverie on transformation—how heat and water reshape stone, how chance creates wonder, and how even the harshest landscapes can yield vibrant life.
