Our Acknowledgment
We honor that Sonja Lei Art lives and creates on the ancestral, unceded lands of the Wašiišiw (Washoe), Nisenan (Maidu), Numu (Northern Paiute), and Newe (Western Shoshone) peoples. We recognize their enduring relationship with this place, their stewardship of local plants and waters, and their resilience in preserving culture, language, and ceremony.
The Land and Its Peoples
For millennia, these Nations have cultivated deep knowledge of native flora, weaving plant wisdom into art, healing, and community. The sagebrush steppe and river valleys you see here—home to California poppies, elderberry, camas, and more—are living testaments to their traditional ecological practices. Today, the Washoe, Maidu, Paiute, Shoshone, and Mojave peoples continue to guide how we understand and care for this land.
